British Values

How do we promote core British Values?

The Warwick School is wholly supportive of the Coalition Government’s Prevent Strategy first published in 2011, which seeks to challenge extremism and prevent radicalisation.

We believe that each of our students deserves an education which allows them to play their full part as British citizens who contribute to and enjoy the best of what our society has to offer.  In providing this we promote British values throughout our taught curriculum, routines, policies and overall ethos.

The Prevent Strategy defines core British values as:

  • democracy;
  • rule of law;
  • equality of opportunity;
  • freedom of speech;
  • the rights of all men and women to live free from persecution of any kind.

The information below is intended to give an outline of some, but by no means all of the ways in which the school promotes these values:

Democracy

The democratic process forms a key part of the Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum and all students study this at Key Stage 3.  The struggle for democracy in Britain and in other nations throughout history is dealt with extensively in the History curriculum and through discussions on the nature of authority in Religious Education lessons.   In addition assembly themes and ‘Words for the Week’ highlight issues of democracy in our society.

Students experience democracy in practice through the election of our School Council which meets each half term and is influential in deciding matters important to the life of the school.  Similarly, our prefects, Senior Prefects, Head Girl and Head Boy are selected through a rigorous election process.

The rule of law

Students are taught to respect rules that are used to make our school an orderly place in which to learn and are given many opportunities to consider the importance of the laws which govern the nation.  Assemblies consider the nature of power, justice, the rights and responsibilities of the individual and address important issues such as e-safety including what is permissible on-line. 

The history of our legal system is taught through the History curriculum and students consider the problems of criminal behaviour in Geography and PSHE in which the legal aspects of drug awareness and sexual health are also discussed.   We work closely with our local Policing team who provide presentations for our students from time to time.  Students have enjoyed the chance to visit both magistrates’ courts and criminal courts to witness the law in action.

Equality of Opportunity

The equality of all people is an issue addressed in assemblies and across the curriculum.  Issues of race, gender, sexuality, disability and religion are considered extensively throughout the PSHE curriculum, in History through the study of topics such as the Holocaust and the Civil Rights movement.   In English students study texts which focus on issues of equality from ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’ to ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ and they are encouraged  to enter into debates on the nature of equality and fairness. 

Students are aware of and contribute to the Anti-Bullying Policy and were instrumental in securing the Surrey County Council Anti-Bullying Award.  They act as Peer Mentors to other students in other Year Groups. 

The School’s Single Equality Scheme, Accessibility Policy and Equality Policy underpin all aspects of our work with students, staff and the wider community.

Freedom of Speech

The School Council and Prefect system encourages students to exercise their right to free speech whilst their responsibilities in ensuring that what they say verbally, in writing or on-line does not cause offense or militate against the rights of others.  This message is reinforced in assemblies and through the formal curriculum in PSHE, English, History and Religious Education. 

The rights of all to live free from persecution of any kind

We are fortunate to live and work in a diverse community and students are encouraged to celebrate the differences between individuals and to see these as enriching.

As noted above the Anti-Bullying Policy is given a high profile within the school and students are keen to report that they feel safe, value the rights of others to safety and would know who to turn to if they were concerned in this regard.

Aside from assemblies we run regular Multi-Faith Days in which members of a cross section of religions visit the school to discuss religious, moral and social issues from a variety of perspectives with our students.  Through Religious Education students learn about a range of religions and discuss cultural differences and similarities.   All students take a GCSE examination in Religious Studies. 

Student representatives have taken part in the Holocaust Memorial Day and Year Groups have been visited by and spoken with a Holocaust survivor.
